Elementary teachers’ game admission waived

KOSCIUSKO — Elementary teachers in the Attala County School District have the option to get into regular athletic events free of charge by working a game duty.

The Attala County School Board passed the measure on January 7.  The board first discussed waiving the admission fee at the December meeting.

Superintendent Bryan Weaver said he had spoken with the high school principals and they were concerned because game admission was a source of funding for athletics.

“I think that as far as our employees go this would give them a benefit than just a regular citizen,” Weaver said.

Weaver added that the board would need to decide if elementary teachers would be required to work athletic duty or not.

He explained that duties are designated to high school staff currently.

“Ethel has more sports than anybody. It does stress those teachers out,” he said. “(In the past) they’ve given the option to Greenlee that if they want to work, they will let them in.”

“If I was a teacher at Ethel and I was having duty and I saw a Greenlee teacher come in, show their badge and go to the game,” Weaver said. “I would be kinda upset about that. I think we are going to have resentment issues.”

The board approved that if elementary teachers signed up for one duty, they would get into regular season athletic events at not charge by showing their identification badge.

However with the duty schedule set for the year, elementary teachers will get in free of charge with badge for the remainder of the school year.
