KOSCIUSKO —
Bids opened for sanitation services in Durant were reviewed and discussed by the board of aldermen at the Tuesday, January 22, meeting.
The city approved to enlist the services of Waste Management, out of Kosciusko, over Waste Pro, based in Jackson.
A move away from services of Resourceful Environmental Services or RES, based in Cleveland, has been a topic of discussion over several board meetings.
Waste Pro bid twice a week bag pick up for $19.50 per residence per month and $13.45 once a week with approved containers.
Waste Management bid $15.95 twice a week bag pick up and $10.85 once a week for container, both residential.
Ward One Alderwoman Barbara Booth motioned to accept Waste Management's bid of twice a week bag pick up.
Ward Two Alderman Bo Patterson voted against the move in favor of keeping three local positions for city employees with RES.
"The people we have working on the garbage trucks are residents of Durant," said Patterson. "We're putting all three of these people out of a job."
"I think we have to stand up for the little people," Patterson said.
"Waste Management has said, that was the reason we thought about Waste Management, because they would hire our people," Booth said.
"What we decide here tonight it's just going to be binding for a few months (with upcoming city elections)," said Patterson, "let the new administration deal with the long term basis."
"We always said 'Holmes County is on the bottom.' We're going to put three Holmes County people out of work," said Patterson. "I hope they get the job (to be considered for hire with Waste Management), but they already got a job."
The motion passed 3-1.
In other business, a privilege license was issued to Steve "DJ Steve Smooth" Gray to open the former Ritz Cafe.
"It'll be an old fashioned soul food restaurant open seven days a week," said Gray.
Gray said he planned to be open Friday.
A free clothes give-away was announced for February 23 at the National Guard Armory in Durant from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
