Nail claimed 62 percent of the 5,698 votes counted or 3,533 votes. Roby claimed 38 percent of the votes or 2,165 votes.

Of the 21 precincts, Nail claimed the majority of 18 boxes. They were: South Central, Williamsville, McCool, Liberty Chapel, Berea, North West, North Central, Aponaug, Carmack, Possumneck, Hesterville, Newport, Sallis, McAdams, East, Providence, Zama, Thompson and Ethel.

Roby claimed the majority of votes from the North East, South West and Sallis precincts.

During the November 8 general election, nearly 70 percent of Attala Countians voted not only for the special election of sheriff but for  U.S. president and congressmen.

Nail, who had been serving as sheriff since the death of William Lee in May, was previously the ACSD chief deputy and arson investigator.

Roby had previously been an investigator with the ACSD.

The next county-wide election will be in 2015.
