A Kosciusko man has been charged in the murder of two nuns in Durant, according to multiple reports.
Rodney Earl Sanders, 46, has been charged with two counts of capital murder in connection to the crime.
Sanders was arrested and charged Friday evening by officials with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations after an interview.
“Sanders was developed as a person of interest early on in the investigation,” MBI Director Lt. Colonel Jimmy Jordan said in a statement. “With the cooperation of the Durant and Kosciusko Police Departments, Holmes County Sheriff’s Department and the Attorney General Office this heinous crime has been resolved.”
Sanders is being held in an undisclosed detention center awaiting his initial court appearance.
Paula Merrill, a nun with Kentucky-based Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, and Margaret Held, a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis in Milwaukee, Wisconsin were found stabbed-to-death in their Durant home early Thursday morning.
A blue Toyota Corolla that belonged to one of the victims was found on an abandoned road less than a mile Thursday afternoon.
The two nuns didn't show up Thursday morning at a clinic they operate in Lexington, about 13 miles away. Clinic workers called police when the pair didn't arrive.
