Col. Fred T. Hight

Colonel Fred T. Hight, Sr., 99, of Leakesville, MS, died on December 29, in Hattiesburg.  He was born in Kosciusko, on October 7, 1913.  He was the youngest and sole survivor of nine brothers and sisters.

  Col. Hight graduated with a BS degree from Mississippi State University in 1938 where he was an outstanding athlete lettering in football, baseball and track.  He was a charter member of the Mississippi State athletic M Club.  He married Bernice Hyatt of Leakesville in 1941, and was only two weeks away from celebrating their 72nd wedding anniversary when he died.  They made their home in Leakesville since his retirement as Director of Personnel at Keesler AFB in 1968.  COL Hight served in the United States Air Force for 30 years.

  COL Hight was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Leakesville.  He founded the Gideons International Chapter of Greene County MS and taught Sunday School for 30 years.  He served as an alderman for the Town of Leakesville, and led the effort to open the Leakesville Library.  He also started the Leakesville Farm Bureau Insurance Agency.  He loved the forest and planted many, many pine trees.  In 2003, he was selected as Greene County Tree Farmer of the Year.

 COL Hight is survived by his wife, Bernice, their two children, Fred, Jr. and Anna, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.  The family requests any memorial donations be given to the Gideons International.
