Let's step up to the plate

KOSCIUSKO — As I told someone just the other day – Now that Attala County Circuit Court is over, I can get back in the swing of writing a column.

Covering court can be intense and extremely heartbreaking. It’s also very time consuming.

I was watching an episode of Vh1’s “Celebrity Rehab,” where actress Mackenzie Phillips talked about being arrested for possession of narcotics in an airport. She told the arresting officers not to do this because – “She was somebody’s mother.”

While we might not all be someone’s parent but, we are all somebody’s child.

I have seen it one too many times in the courtroom, where a split second decision has changed not only the life of the accused but their family as well.

We, as a community, need to step up to the plate and try to be role models to our teens and young adults before some of them end up behind bars.

Most of those found on trial or pleading guilty in court are in their 20s and don’t have a high school diploma.

We all need to do more in our schools, churches and clubs because they face more hardships and pressures than this teen of the 90s ever did.

I give of my time so I encourage you to do the same.

Census Day

While dropping off your children at Kosciusko City Schools Thursday, you might see a few students with signs and shirts reminding you to fill out your Census form.

Thursday has been proclaimed ‘Census Day’ – the day when you are supposed to have your form completed and in the mail.  If not you could be visited by a door-to-door Census taker.  Let’s get some Federal dollars for our county. It’s only 10 questions.

Ten years ago come Sunday, a handful of fanatical thugs flew hijacked American airplanes into American buildings and what both we and the rest of the world had always thought of as America began to almost immediately change. Today, that 10-year-ago image is but a memory.
