KOSCIUSKO —
My husband loves bacon. But only if it’s cooked in the oven at 425 degrees. It comes out in about 20 minutes crispy and crunchy.
The week before Thanksgiving we were still in Sallis at our ranch and I
was, as usual being a good wife, cooking bacon for his breakfast. I was lifting it out of the oven on a shallow cookie sheet and some of the bacon grease spilled onto the floor around my bare feet.
Well, being so astute on my feet as I am, I slipped. The bacon went high in the air, along with my feet, and I fell on my left side. I could almost hear the break as the humerus in my left arm snapped. I told Roy I had broken my arm and I could not possibly tell you what endearment that came out of his mouth.. (It’s private)
Now, Roy had just had a knee replacement a few months earlier and couldnot lift or pull on anything for risk of damaging his knee. Well, I am covered in bacon grease, head to foot. I can’t move. If I do, I’ll slip again, and break another appendage, so I have to do this on my own. Well, guess what? I CAN’T. I am just too slicky from the grease.
So, we call my youngest son to come to the rescue. He gets there in record time but the gate is locked so he has to climb over our gate to get into the house area. I have on a long pink T-shirt gown, completely covered in bacon grease, which I cannot possibly get off over my head.
My arm is just dangling by my side. So, Marc and Roy slip and slide getting me to a standing position after a few tries and we head to the ER. They x-ray and we are on our way to the Sports Medicine Clinic in Jackson.
Okay, I need you to picture this. I have not been out of bed long before the accident – my hair is fuzzily on top of my head in a little
ball except for what’s falling in my eyes and all round. I am still dressed in my pink T shirt gown covered in bacon grease, and we walk into the MSMC into a room full of about 50 to 60 people.
As we sat down, I notice people leaning toward me smelling. Someone even asked, “Who’s got bacon, I’m hungry.” People honestly walked by me just to smell. I am fairly certain they felt like I had escaped from Whitfield with my hair and my breakfast.
Heck, when we got back to Sallis, dogs were in the yard trying to jump onto me - bacon!
We had to cut the T shirt off and it still, to this day smells like bacon, even after a good washing. My husband doesn’t have bacon quite as often now.
Bacon in the oven

Can ‘good’ news sell the newspaper?
As the saying goes – “If it bleeds, it leads.” The “hard stuff” – murders, wrecks, fires, deaths and the like – has been selling newspapers and upping the ratings of television stations for years.

Fear of Big Red canceled fishing
I have said before that my daddy loved fishing. Not having a son to fish with for eight years, I was his fishing buddy. He had his favorite “fishing holes” and one of them belonged to Mr. John Yates. The only problem was, we had to walk about a mile from where we parked our car to get to the pond.

Summertime visiting
I was always so excited for summer break to come about because that meant that I could begin my visits to my cousin’s houses out in the country. I loved to spend several days with my aunt and uncle and three cousins in the Hebron community. I would always go during their revival time and we would go every night.

Parlez-vous francais?
Absolutely not! Some of my Southern English is so drawn out with my Southern accent that some cannot understand me at all times.
