You’re never too old to learn

I remember a high school teacher telling me that you are never too old to quit learning.

After two children, I believe that more than ever.

Take this past Monday for instance.

While taking the day off to be with my children who were out of school, I ventured into the Hudson’s Dirt Cheap, hoping to find a suit in my size.

I didn’t find a suit but my older son did find a basketball goal, which he decided we really needed. It was $199.99 with 70 percent off. I quickly glanced inside the box and decided that for $60, it would be a good deal.

We made it home with our good deal only to find out that despite what it said on the box, there was no rim or pole included. I tried to take it back but the nice clerk was quick to remind me that “all sales are final.”

She did give me a rim out of the other unit they had but now I’m left trying to find a pole to hang this thing on. But I just attribute it to a lesson learned.

• I got the chance to visit Weir High School Wednesday afternoon and had an interesting visit. Here’s what I learned.

Weir starts school at 7:30 a.m. and goes until 3:20 p.m. The first students get on the bus at something like 6:15 a.m. I can barely get up by 6:15 a.m. much less get ready to go by that time. I’ll do it for sunrise service but I can promise you I’m taking a nap Sunday afternoon while watching the Masters – just like I did this Sunday and have many others just like them.

Also met East Mississippi women’s coach Sharon Thompson – don’t be surprised when she’s a Division I coach, she’s got “IT” and can recruit. Showed my age a little bit when I recalled seeing her play in high school at Sumter County in Alabama. They were playing Livingston and I begged the coach to sit on the bench, because otherwise I’d have to referee to find a place in the gym.

• Here’s a funny note. I have a pastor friend in Santiago, Chile that I have been corresponding with via e-mail for more than a year now.

I sent him a note this past week telling him of a woman that got saved this past Sunday morning during a service in which I preached. I made a note that “the Spirit was really moving during the service.”

Well, when you punch that into the translator program I use to help with my Spanish, I told him “that the alcohol was moving fast during the service.”

So much for technology.

• I got a note from an interested reader that suggested that the publisher tell his “star reporter” that the Rib House in Tupelo had moved to Oxford. Thanks for the tip reader and next time I’ll have the publisher beat the star reporter with a wet noodle when he makes such an error.

• You can tell when the kids, especially 4-year-old Marshall, have been watching too much television.

We were coming home the other day and I threatened to whip my 11-year-old Jacob over some matter. Marshall chimed in with a chant of “sac-ri-fice, sac-ri-fice, sac-ri-fice,” in such a manner that you could only laugh at.

I think he’d put Jacob’s head on a pole if I let him. But at least we’d have a place to hang our basketball rim.
