The Kosciusko Whippets took a big step in the right direction last Friday night, and that was playing post-season football after a winless campaign in 2011.
Unfortunately for the Whippets, the post season ended last Friday night as well with a loss to the Itawamba AHS Indians 42-0.
The Whippets moved the ball well early on in the contest but turnovers halted those drives and the Indians took advantage.
With 8:10 left in the first quarter, running back Charles Moore scored the Indians first touchdown of the night to go ahead of the Whippets 7-0.
The Whippets then put together another time-consuming drive but fumbled deep in Indian territory around the three-minute mark.
With 1:02 left in the first quarter, Dandy Dozen running back Ashton Shumpert raced 33 yards to the end zone for another Indian score, increasing their lead to 14-0.
With 9:11 left in the second quarter, Indian quarterback Tyler Dossett found Makel Hamer from 30 yards out for another touchdown to pad their lead 21-0.
After another short Whippet possession the Indians took over with 8:28 remaining in the half and Shumpert took the Dossett hand-off 51 yards to pay dirt and increased their lead to 28-0.
With 2:57 left on the clock before the half, Indian running back Charles Moore punched another one in from five yards out to increase their lead to 35-0.
After another stalled drive, the Whippets relinquished possession to the Indians with less than a minute remaining before half time.
With 30 seconds left before the intermission, Moore once again found the end zone from 24 yards out to increase the Indian lead to 42-0, and that would be the final as well because neither team scored in the second half.
“I think Itawamba is a great team, they’re one of the top two teams in the north,” said Whippet head coach Tyler Peterson. “I really expect them and Noxubee to battle it out in the next couple of weeks. We didn’t play really well and we got behind early and we dropped our heads a little bit, kind of like we have in the past. I hate it ended that way but it was still a big accomplishment this year to make the playoffs and getting that fourth seed, it was a stepping stone for us and some motivation going into the off season,” Offensively the Whippets were led by Jabri Selmon who had 47 yards on 20 carries and Deavolon Edwards with 46 yards on 10 carries.
Quarterback Tim Wade was 2-8 for 19 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively the Whippet leaders were Kendric Riley with six tackles, Orlando Hill with five tackles and Kendrick Pittman as well as Mitchell Myer with four stops each.
The Whippets ended the season with a 4-8 record, and were 2-3 in Region 4-4A play.

Myer wins state, Hill finishes third
The third time is the charm for Mitchell Myer at the 4A MHSAA State Track Meet. In 2011 Mitchell finished fourth with 11-00.00 and in 2012 he finished sixth with a leap of 11-00.00. On Monday, May 13, Mitchell vaulted 12-06.00 to capture his fifth victory to stay undefeated for the year.

Tigers finish season 15-13
The Ethel Tigers were fresh off a thrilling first round sweep of French Camp when they traveled to Stringer on Saturday for game one of the best-of-three series.
The Tigers would drop game one 5-3.
Game one had been pushed from Thursday to Saturday due to inclement weather, pushing game two to Monday night in Ethel, to which the Tigers fell once again, 7-2. -
Kosy moves to third round
The Kosciusko Whippets had a bitter taste in their mouths from 2012’s playoff series loss to New Albany in three games.
That taste is clearly better now, and New Albany was once again the foe. -
Kosy boys and girls track head to State meet
The Kosciusko boys and girls track teams participated in the North State Track meet at Pontotoc on May 4 and will be sending one boys and four girls to the Class 4A State Meet at Pearl on May 13
