The Ethel Lady Tigers slow-pitch softball team won their third consecutive district championship with a 2-1 victory over the Weir Lady Lions.
The Lady Tigers finished region play going 6-0 and 12-6 overall.
In the Weir victory, Haley Breazeale got the win pitching seven strong innings, only giving up one run while walking one.
The hits didn’t come easy because the Lady Tigers only had six in the game.
Offensively, Taylor Hannah, Avery Bouchillon, Brooklyn Whitman and Shelby Varnes all had hits, but it was hard base running with two outs that gave the Lady Tigers the trophy.
Last Thursday was senior night as Shelby Varnes, Lindsey McNeal and Brooke Self played their last regular season home game at Ethel.
According to the Ethel head coach Chris Schuster all three have had wonderful careers at Ethel. “The senior class was my first freshman class as head coach,” said Schuster. “As a group we have a 27-1 record in district play winning three consecutive district championships and have gone to the playoffs all four years. I want to thank the seniors and the senior parents for their dedication and commitment the last four years. It has been a wonderful experience for me.”
Ethel beat French Camp 6-0 to finish out the regular season.
Varnes, Bouchillon, Juliyah Erving, Hannah and Madeleine Sims all had hits.
Breazeale pitched well for the Lady Tigers and only walked one batter.
The Lady Tigers played Tuesday in the state playoffs against Pelahatchie and will play Saturday against either Nanih Waiya or Bogue Chitto if they win.
“The girls have done a wonderful job this year,” added Schuster. “Winning a region championship is hard enough, but to win three in a row is a first for Ethel. The girls deserve a lot of credit for their dedication and hard work throughout the season. Adversity throughout the season was something we dealt with and together we grew as a team. Hopefully we can learn from that and come together for two more weeks.”
***NOTE*** The Lady Tigers defeated Pelahatchie twice on Tuesday, 3-2 and 7-1 and will advance to play Nanih Waiya on Saturday in Ethel. Game time TBA
