KOSCIUSKO —

Longtime basketball coach and history teacher Gary Myrick passed away last Thursday at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson.  He was 63.

Services were held Monday in Kosciusko.

Other than his obvious love of basketball, coach Myrick was best remembered for his love of American History, especially the Civil War.

“I first knew coach Myrick from when he coached at Winona and I was here in Kosciusko in the late 70s,” said longtime friend and current Holmes Community College tennis coach Greg Levert.  “He was a fiery competitor and his kids were always well behaved and prepared.  It was always a challenge and a pleasure to coach against him.”  Myrick would leave Winona for Forest where he again coached basketball before coming to Kosciusko.

He would assist former Whippet head basketball coach Carlos Smith in the early 90s.  After retirement coach Myrick continued to officiate both public and private school basketball.

“He was a good Christian who thought his vocation was his calling and he will be sorely missed,” added Levert.

Myrick is survived by his son Grant Myrick of Madison, as well as his sister Nancy Gross of Pearl and brother Danny Myrick of Flowood.
