French Camp Academy takes key boys win over Weir

French Camp Academy took a crucial Region 6-1A boys basketball win over visiting Weir on Friday night as the Panthers continue to try and improve their seeding for the upcoming region tournament.

FCA was set to visit Noxapater on Tuesday, before taking part in the Region 6-1A Tournament set to be hosted by Weir High School beginning on Feb. 8.

French Camp built a 30-20 halftime lead against the Lions before taking a comfortable 61-43 victory.

Kawsu Sillah scored 18 points and had seven rebounds for FCA, while Deeyon Turner scored 12 points and Josh Hardin had 11. Josh Williams and Bangali Sillah led the winners with 10 rebounds each.

Cramer Miller led Weir with 17 points, while Antoine Dobbs scored eight.

The FCA boys were outscored 18-2 in the second quarter last Tuesday, on the way to an 80-34 loss to league-leading East Oktibbeha.

Kawsu Sillah scored 14 points, while Williams had seven points and six rebounds. Casey Neal led East Oktibbeha with 20 points.

The FCA girls lost to Weir 52-13 and East Oktibbeha 48-15. Molly Butler had six points and seven rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers, while Spin Mitchell and Mollee McKnight scored four each.

WEIR

The Weir High School girls basketball team will be trying to fine tune itself as the Lady Lions close out the regular season headed into the Region 6-1A Basketball Tournament.

Weir, which will host the six-team tournament, had little trouble picking up a pair of girls wins last week as the Lady Lions beat Nanih Waiya 63-16 on Tuesday, followed by a 52-13 win over French Camp on Friday.

Weir outscored Nanih Waiya 30-9 in the second quarter and then held the Lady Warriors to just two second-half points on the way to the big win.

Chatiuanna Miller hit on seven of her eight shots from the field to lead Weir with 16 points, while Andrea Carter scored 12 points and Vonkesha Miller added nine.

Pratt scored 14 points to lead the Weir girls against FCA, while Vonkesha Miller notched 12 and Carter scored eight. The Weir boys dropped a pair of Region 6-1A games, falling to French Camp 60-43 and Nanih Waiya 77-66.

The Lions fell behind 22-9 after one quarter of play against Nanih Waiya before beginning to fight back. Weir scored half of its points in the fourth quarter alone, as the Lions outscored NW 33-25 over the final eight minutes of play.

Sammie Carter scored 13 to lead the Lions, while Cramer Miller hit for 12, Darian Meaders 10 and Jay Miller 7.

ACKERMAN

After having some success in the Mid-Mississippi Challenge on Jan. 23, both the Ackerman High School boys and girls hit a little rough spot.

Both squads lost to Louisville, Hollandale-Simmons and Williams-Sullivan headed into Tuesday night's games at Winona. The Indians and Lady Indians host Region 4-2A foe Eupora on Friday night to close out the regular season.

John Cummings scored a game-high 37 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Ackerman in its 76-61 loss to Louisville. Josh Brown added 11 for the Indians.

On Friday night the Indians fell behind early as homestanding Hollandale-Simmons took a convincing 97-46 win. Will Upchurch hit on four-of-six shots from the floor to lead AHS with 10 points, while Cummings scored nine and Mannie Batts hit for seven. Eugene Johnson scored 38 for Hollandale-Simmons.

Ackerman fell behind 57-23 Monday night on the way to a 96-39 loss to Region 4-2A foe Williams-Sullivan. Upchurch scored 17 points to lead the Indians.

The Lady Indians lost to Louisville 47-18, Hollandale-Simmons 60-30 and Williams-Sullivan 60-31. Cutts scored eight points to lead AHS against Louisville,.

Carmen Long used six free throws to score a game-high 10 points for AHS against Hollandale-Simmons. Bridgette Robinson and Cutts added eight points each for Ackerman.

Cutts pumped in 14 points for the Lady Indians against Williams-Sullivan.
