100th win for program meaningful to Kosy girls

Monday was a day to remember for the Kosciusko High School girls fast-pitch softball team.

The Lady Whippets surprised head coach Tony Terry with a cake, plaque and unique picture to celebrate the programs 100th victory.

"I really hadn't thought about it until somebody brought it up to me," Terry said of the milestone win. "We've been doing this for five years and two weeks and I guess it shows how far we have come. We have been fairly successful since we started."

The players presented Terry a cake with the number 100 on it and also gave him a picture of the players spelling out "100" on the football field, much like a marching band would do at halftime. Kosy's all-time record is currently 103-32.

"It means a lot to me that the girls wanted to do something," he said.

The Lady Whippets are off to a 5-0 start and found out this week that they are ranked No. 8 in the state according to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

"I like it for the girls," Terry said of the ranking. "I know as a coach it really doesn't mean a whole lot this time of year. We want to be ranked when it is over with."

The Lady Whippets have continued to receive dominating pitching performances on the mound from Allison Ray and Kaitlin Young and have also showed some offensive potential.

Last week Kosy beat Winona 12-2, Ethel 15-0 and East Webster 10-0.

"Winona has a really good young pitcher and Swayzee Hollenhead of East Webster does a pretty good job too," Terry said. "We really responded to the challenge."

Kosciusko scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to blow open the game against Winona. Young had two hits for the Lady Whippets, while Kaitlyn Hicks smacked a triple, Ray a double and Katie Ferguson and Haleigh Warren a single each.

Ray picked up the win on the mound with five strikeouts.

Young limited East Webster to just one hit, while Ferguson smacked a single, double, triple and drove in two runs to power the Kosy attack. Ray had a triple and single for the winners, while Lyn Browning had two singles, Cassandra Cobb a double and Hicks a single.

Ray fired a three-inning no-hitter in the win over Ethel, recording six strikeouts in the process. Hicks had a triple and single for KHS, while Browning had two hits and Ray and MacKenzie Dickerson picked up one each.
