ETHEL —
Sixteen miles, that’s probably about the distance you would have to travel from either school to participate in any MHSAA activity that takes place on their respective campuses.
Weir made the trip to Ethel Friday night, and the Lady Lions were not very gracious visitors defeating the Lady Tigers 49-36, but the Tigers returned the favor in the second game by downing the visiting Lions 63-28.
The Lady Tigers, after being down 26-12 in the first half, and 36-25 after three, were able to pull within 6 points of the Lady Lions with just a little over two minutes left in the contest.
But, unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, this victory was not meant to be. Weir was able to widen the gap once more by scoring six unanswered points in the final two minutes for a 13-point victory over the Lady Tigers.
“We looked a lot better in the second half, had a lot of mental mistakes in the first half, we looked like deer in the headlights out there”, coach Patrick Dillinger said.
The leading scorers for the Lady Lions were Brianna Baber with 17 points, Lanikka Patterson with eight, and both Laretta Woodard and L’Terrica Evans with six points each. “We didn’t play our best game, we played hard, but it’s tough to get a win on the road, and I’m glad we got the win”, coach Danya Turner said.
“Ethel played really good tonight, they hustle, when you hustle like they did, you can turn any ballgame around.”
The leading scorers for the Lady Tigers were Rita Jackson with 17 points, Juliyah Eriving with 12 points, and Keshauri Merritt with five points.
The boys game started big for the Tigers, stayed big for the Tigers, and resulted in a big win for the Tigers.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 23-8 lead in the first quarter and took a 46-10 lead into the half, which was enough for the Tiger victory.
“We had good effort, got a little complacent there towards the end, and stopped playing defense, but I was proud of the overall effort”, coach Corey Parish said.
“We’re still missing too many lay-ups though, we need to keep that first half intensity going into our next game.”
The leading scorers for the Tigers were Michael Erving with 13 points, Corey McBride with 10 points, Michael Johnson with nine, and finally, Ashlen McCain, Deon Hall, and Dominick Walls with eight points each.
The leading scorers for the Lions were D. Woodard with 11 points, and R. Woodard with 10 points.
Ethel played French Camp Tuesday night and will host East Oktibbeha next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
