If you want to see a smile cross the face of Kosciusko High School baseball coach Jonathan Jones, just mention pitching.
The Whippets have used three outstanding starting efforts and some solid bullpen work to jump out to a 3-0 start on the 2010 season.
"I think pitching would have to be our strong point so far," Jones said on Tuesday morning. "We have only given up four runs and two of those were unearned. We've also gotten some timely hits, but so far our pitching is what has really stood out."
Kosciusko beat Carthage 8-1 on Friday and Philadelphia 10-0 on Saturday in its own tournament, before taking a 13-3 home win over Morton on Monday.
Left-hander junior Coy Sorenson went six strong innings in Friday's win over Carthage, striking out 11 batters, while Steven Hanson came on to pitch the last inning.
Kosy took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After Carthage scored once in the top of the fourth, the Whippets hit for six runs in the fourth to break the game open.
Cole McBride picked up two of Kosy's five hits in the win over Carthage.
Tyrell Harmon, McBride and Dylan Parker had two hits each in the win over Philadelphia Saturday, while Patrick Stewart struck out 12 Tornadoes and only allowed one hit to pick up the win.
Monday's win over the Panthers saw Hanson picked up the win on the mound, while Harmon had a pair of big two-out, two-run hits early in the game to give the Whippets control. Hanson recorded eight strikeouts, before Kenny Barron came on to close out the game.
Ty Dean and Hanson also had two hits for KHS, while Harmon belted a double.
