The Durant Lady Tigers paid a visit to Region 6 rival McAdams last Friday night and came away with a hard fought 50-46 victory that took an overtime period to decide.
The Lady Tigers put 10 points on the board in the first quarter and led the Lady Bulldogs 10-8.
It was more of the same from the Lady Tigers in the second quarter when they again scored 10 points while allowing only nine points for the hosts.
The Lady Tigers would take a 20-17 lead into the half.
The Lady Bulldogs would keep pace with the Lady Tigers in the third quarter, but were still outscored 8-7 and trailed 28-24 as the fourth quarter began.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to gain momentum in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Lady Tigers 17-12.
This would tie the game at 40-40 and force overtime.
The Lady Tigers took control early, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to keep it close, and won the contest 50-46.
The leading scorers for the Lady Tigers were Myiesha Reynolds with 15 points, Maronta Coffee with 13 points, Tajeah Campbell with nine points and Tamara Riley with five points.
“Lately we’ve been learning how to keep fighting,” said Lady Tiger head coach Kenyon Ross. “This is our second game in a row to go into overtime and our girls are learning to keep their composure. We didn’t panic and just kept playing because that’s the type ballgame we’ve been in lately. They did a good job of just keeping their heads in it.” The Lady Tigers are a perfect 7-0 in region play and will need to win two out of their next three ballgames to be guaranteed the number one seed.
The leading scorers for the Lady Bulldogs were KeEric Phillips with 10 points, Amber Newell with nine points, Chelsea Kilbert with seven points and Deveda Newell as well as Kennedy Landfair with six points each.
“We fought back, I’ll have to give credit to our girls for fighting back hard,” said Lady Bulldogs head coach Michael Huffman. “We haven’t been playing well these last few ballgames, but what I did like about tonight is that they showed some heart in how they fought back.”
The Lady Bulldogs are 10-10 overall and 6-2 in region play.
The Lady Tigers hosted Sebastopol Tuesday night and will make a return trip to Sebastopol next Tuesday night.
The Lady Bulldogs hosted Mississippi School for the Deaf Tuesday night and will travel to Pelahatchie Friday night for a 6 p.m. contest.
