Mustangs win thriller over Hawks

LEXINGTON —

J. J. McClain traveled to Camden last Friday night and won a Region 4-3A contest in overtime, defeating the Velma Jackson Hawks, 22-20.

The Mustangs are now 6-2 overall and 1-1 in region play.

The Hawks drew first blood on the night and led 6-0 after the first quarter.

The Mustangs were able to counter and tied the score at six all, but the Hawks were able to find pay dirt right before the half, conversion good, to take a 14-6 lead into the intermission.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but McClain was able to tie it at 14-14 late in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the overtime period, but only McClain would be successful on the conversion attempt, winning 22-20.

Offensively, the Mustangs were led by quarterback Rotavious Thurmond who completed seven of 13 pass attempts for 146 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 145 yards on 11 carries.

Timothy Stewart led all defenders by tallying 26 total tackles with five tackles for a loss.  Alvin Wilson had 14 tackles and Tyron Lemon had 13 stops.

Anthony Anderson, Gentry Greer and Brandon Pernell had 11 tackles each as well for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs travel to Cleveland Friday night for a 7 p.m. contest to take on East Side.  East Side is 8-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 4-3A play.
