Holmes Bulldogs down East Central for first victory

DECATUR — A 22-point fourth quarter proved to be the difference here Saturday afternoon as the Holmes Community College Bulldogs picked up a decisive 37-21 win over the Warriors of East Central Community College.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 1-1 on the season and now get ready for the North Division opener set for Thursday in Goodman at Ras Branch Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m. The game can be heard on Breezy 101 on 101.1 FM or breezynews.com.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first midway the first quarter as freshman quarterback James Landry found freshman wide receiver David Hampton in the corner of the end zone on a 19-yard touchdown toss. Taylor Putt`s kick made the score 7-0.

EC`s Derek Crenshaw pulled the Warriors a little closer later in the quarter as his 38 yard field goal made the score 7-3.

A 60-yard interception return put the Warriors back in business midway the second quarter after Maurice Langston returned the pick of Landry all the way to the Bulldog 20. With 6:13 to go, Derrick Cade pounded in from the one. A bobbled snap resulted in no point but EC still led 9-7.

Late in the third quarter, the Bulldogs retook the lead for good as Harry Collins scored from four yards out. Collins added the two-point conversion run making the score 15-9.

The Bulldog lead improved to 23-9 after Landry hooked up with sophomore Chris Frison on a 30-yard touchdown with 14:50 to go in the game. Landry connected with Hampton on the two-point conversion.

East Central pulled within eight after Langston returned a Putt punt 45 yards for a touchdown. The PAT failed making the score 23-15.

The Bulldogs increased the led to 30-15 with 6:22 to go as Collins scored his second touchdown of the night, this one from four yards out as well. Putt`s kick was true.

East Central answered right back with 5:37 to go as Langston scored from five yards out. The two-point try failed making the score 30-21.

The Bulldogs added their final seven on the board as Bulldog safety Trell Hagans intercepted Emmanuel Taylor deep inside Bulldog territory at the five and raced 95 yards for a touchdown. Putt`s kick ended all scoring at 37-21.

Landry finished the day 18-of-22 for 199 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed 13 times for 137 yards.
