EHS fares well in South State powerlfiting

By Austin Bishop

Troymun Hawthorne was among eight Ethel High School lifters to qualify for the MHSAA Class 1A State Powerlifting meet to be held in Jackson on Saturday, April 17.

Hawthorne, competing in the 165-pound class, lifted a total of 1,105 pounds to win his classification in the MHSAA Class 1A South State meet held at Ridgeland last Thursday.

The top three lifters in each classification qualified for the state meet, with two Tigers earning second place finishes and five others claiming third.

Powerlifting is made up of three disciplines — squat, bench press and dead lift — with each lifter getting three attempts in each event. The three weights are added together to get a total weight.

Ryan Self totaled 405 pounds to take second in the 114-pound division, while Hunter Trehern's 355 pounds was good enough for second in the 123-pound classification.

Antez Hopkins was third in the 132-pound division with 730 pounds, while Nick Winters totaled 710 pounds to take third in the 148-pound class.

Lawrence Sheffer was third in the 220-pound class with a total weight of 850 pounds, while Geoffry Allen's 810 pounds was good enough for third in the 275-pound division and Christian Sanders had third in the 308-pound division with 930 pounds.

As a team, Ethel finished third behind Bogue Chitto and Nanih Waiya.
