KOSCIUSKO —
I try really hard at times to just let things be, you know, but I find it hard to just let this one go.
Watching young talented athletes give up a sport to exclusively pursue another one, just hits me all wrong.
I've never understood why an individual with exceptional athletic ability would choose to play just one sport when they are talented at others.
Many times a certain sport will allow an athlete to be better prepared to play his favorite sport if he chose to stay with it and work hard at it.
Those summer workouts for football are tough, but they help the young athlete to become stronger, faster and more agile for his 'favorite' sport. Trying to save your arm, or create more time for the batting cage are all great reasons not to play football I guess, but ask Roy Oswalt, Chipper Jones, Todd Helton, or even Deion Sanders, to name a few, what they think about playing one sport exclusively.
They all played football and they played it well.
They have all gone on to have long successful baseball careers with Sanders playing both professionally.
This doesn't just involve baseball players, I've heard basketball players say they wanted to protect their knees, which can be blown out while turkey hunting--I’m here to tell you.
I just don't understand this mentality of having God given talent and not using it.
School pride kept me in, because I absolutely loved competing for my colors.
The experiences that will be missed, and the game changing talent that they had, could absolutely change the course of a season for a football team. Memories that will never be made because they weren't there to scoop up that fumble or take a pick to the house for the game winning touchdown, instead, they were in the stands on Friday night, and probably got their 500 cuts-a-day in after school while the gridiron warriors sweated and toiled all week.
I do understand that football is not for everybody, but I have seen far too many that could make an impact on the field sitting in the stands.
Those memories and possible championships gone forever, while their potential remains 'uninjured' and untapped.
