KOSCIUSKO — There may have been a lot of excitement in Kosciusko on Monday because of the Whippets being ranked No. 4 in the state in Class 4A by the Jackson Clarion-Ledger newspaper, but it wasn't coming from the KHS coaching staff.

"We tried to head that off yesterday," Kosciusko head football coach Stan McCain said on Tuesday morning. "We are trying to get to the playoffs and that (being ranked) isn't going to help us one bit.

"I told the guys yesterday that (the rankings) were for everybody else to talk about," he said. "If they will listen to the coaches, we will tell them the truth."

The Whippets, who also broke into the Mississippi Prep Sports Source Class 4A rankings at No. 18, have a tough task the next two weeks as they face a pair of larger schools.

Kosciusko visits Class 6A Grenada on Friday night, then hosts Ridgeland — ranked No. 4 in Class 5A by the MPSS — on Sept. 19.

"They are a big football team and they are strong and they are athletic," McCain said of Grenada. "They are just your typical 6A football team."

While not necessarily enamored with his team's rankings, McCain was pleased with his team's performance in its 43-6 win over Yazoo County on Friday night.

"The big difference (between this year and last year when Kosy lost to Yazoo County 14-0), is that we have a little bit more experience," McCain said. "I thought the kids did a great job. Our defense held to six points and I"m pleased with that. That's what we can do when we are able to control the ball and control the ballgame."

The Whippets ground out 381 rushing yards and 15 first downs and were never forced to punt.

John Kern scored on touchdown runs of 3 and 4 yards to put the Whippets up 15-0, before Yazoo County scored its only touchdown of the game to cut it 15-6. Kosy was able to respond on a 25-yard touchdown jaunt by Kern to make ti 22-6 at the half.

Kern scored on a 4-yard run in the third quarter and Kosy added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth on a 45-yard run by Freddie Hill and a 12-yard run by Deavolon Edwards.

Kern led Kosy in rushing with 87 yards on 10 carries, while Jeremy Williams was right behind him with 10 carries for 86 yards.
