On the Porch with Dirk: End of season

KOSCIUSKO — Well, deer season is nearly over and some folks have had a good season while some–-not so good.

I have been blessed to get a freezer full of meat even though I haven't seen the big bucks I would’ve liked to.

The rut never kicked in during the daylight as much as in years past, at least where I was hunting.

However, I did miss a good one that was a few minutes behind a doe.

With so many warm days and a bumper crop of acorns, the deer movement was mostly nocturnal.

If you persisted as I did, you should have at least got some meat.  I've got two more days to hunt before the end.

I hope I can pull a big buck out of the hat––last minute style. Who knows, that is why they call it hunting and not a deer shoot.

Anyway I have had fun even though it hasn't been as productive of a year as past seasons.

I expect the squirrel hunters will be dusting off the old 22's and shotguns, tuning up tree dogs like feist and mountain curs.

Rabbit hunters will be tuning up packs of beagles like well-oiled machines and trappers will be getting the last pelt of winter's fur.

I have even seen a few boats out and I expect some are catching early white perch, catfish and bass.

So whatever you do, don't become a couch potato, stay active and enjoy God's great outdoors.

My sap will start rising as turkey season approaches and I spect I'll participate in some of the aforementioned as well.

I might even try to whittle down some of the wild hog population, as they are becoming a nuisance in some areas. My wife has got a large "honey do" list for me and I reckon I'll have to whittle some of it down before I get into too much.

Many of you wives who have been deer camp widows for the last several months will be getting tired of  your husbands around again, or you just might start one of those "honey do" lists like my wife has.

Sometimes fellas, we just have to pay our dues, if we want to reap the benefits.

Here I am, the last day of turkey season and a monsoon of rain is dousing Attala County.
It is real easy to get depressed in weather like this, especially after a season like I have had.

The Kosciusko Whippets had a bitter taste in their mouths from 2012’s playoff series loss to New Albany in three games.
That taste is clearly better now, and New Albany was once again the foe.
