Lady Lions win Region 5 Tourney, fall in South

The Weir Lady Lions won the Region 5-1A Tournament on February 15 by defeating the Ethel Lady Tigers 55-16, the West Lowndes Lady Panthers 53-32 and the French Camp Lady Panthers 62-52. 

In the first game against the Ethel Lady Tigers the Panthers quickly took control of the ball game and led 16-0 after one quarter of play. 

The Lady Lions were relentless in the second quarter as well and outscored the Lady Tigers once again 10-3 to take a 26-3 lead into the half. 

The Lady Lions never looked back in the second half and led 37-8 entering the fourth quarter. 

After outscoring the Lady Tigers 18-8 in the games final quarter, the Lions pushed the final score to 55-16. 

Next up for the Lady Lions were the West Lowndes Lady Panthers. 

The Lady Lions had an early battle on their hands but pulled away from and soundly defeated the Lady Panthers 52-32 to secure their place in the Region 5 Championship game with the French Camp Academy Lady Panthers. 

The Lady Lions took an early lead over the Lady Panthers and led 11-10 after one quarter of play. 

The Lady Lions then push the score to 32-28 as both teams entered the intermission. 

The third quarter again saw the Lady Lions add to their lead when they outscored the Lady Panthers 17-13 to take a 49-41 lead into the games final stanza. 

French Camp battled hard, but the Lady Lions would not be denied the game or the Region 5 Championship by winning the contest 62-52. 

The Lady Lions were able to again outscore the Lady Panthers 13-11 in the fourth quarter to secure the 10-point victory. 

The Lady Lions then hosted Mount Olive last Monday night in a Class 1A South State Tournament play-in game. 

The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Pirates 12-6 in the first quarter, but were outscored 16-15 in the second. 

The Lady Lions took a 27-22 lead into the break.  The Lady Pirates were able to keep it close in the third quarter when they matched the Lady Lions 15-15. 

The Lady Lions would take a 42-37 lead into the fourth quarter where the Lady Pirates again matched them point-for-point, 14-14, but the Lady Lions were able to hang on for the 56-51 victory and a berth in the Class 1A South State Tournament. 

The Lady Lions traveled to Bogue Chitto last Thursday night to take on the Sebastopol Lady Bobcats in the first round of the tournament. 

The Lady Lions jumped  out to an early 21-16 first quarter lead, but the Lady Bobcats would take control from that point outscoring the Lady Lions consecutively 12-8 in the second, 11-5 in the third and 27-18 in the fourth to secure the 66-52 victory and end the Lady Lions’ 2012-13 season.
