KOSCIUSKO —
With the Oprah Winfrey Boys & Girls Club After School program in full swing and the C.A.R.E. event two weeks away, things are happening at the club and there have been a few changes as well.
Interim director
With the departure of OWB&G Chief Professional Officer Ison Harris, Wayne Buchanan has stepped in as interim CPO, splitting his time between the Kosciusko club and Boys & Girls Club of Carthage/Leake County. Buchanan serves as unit director in Carthage and had previously held the title of unit director in Kosciusko.
Buchanan credits a “smooth transition” because of the “team” of staff members already at the club.
Buchanan will serve as interim until the end of September. His job duties include managing staff, staff development, board development, grant compliance and budget management.
C.A.R.E. event
An annual fundraiser for the club is the C.A.R.E. (Children are the Reason for Excellence) event.
Set for September 20, the banquet will feature a tropical or Caribbean theme.
This week, Buchanan said club members will be helping in the construction of tropical decorations made of tissue paper for the event.
As in years’ past, a silent auction will start the event at 6 p.m. at the club on Knox Road. Local artists have once again donated their work to the club. There will also be some club member art up for grabs. A program will follow at 6:30 p.m.

Program, programs
OWB&G Club Programs Director Iretis Mallet said while the core programs are in place such as “Power Hour” (homework session), and celebrating high academic performing students with “ABC’s Club” through out the year, there has been a bigger push to bring about more mentoring.
The “Be Great” program focuses on at risk youth in fifth-eighth grades.
Mallet said that is a crucial time for students to make it to the next level and not become school dropouts.
“Brunch with the Boys” targets young men, ages 11-19, to give them positive male role models and discuss today’s issues that they face.
And, “Pathway to Promise,” which gives high school students the opportunity to have a mentor, learn about different career paths, do preparatory work for acceptance into college and tour college campuses as well.
The OWB&G Club currently has 159 enrolled members and in Carthage, they have 125.
