Economic impact of Montfort Jones at $26.9M

KOSCIUSKO — A recent study commissioned by the Mississippi Hospital Association found that Attala County’s hospital, Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital, has a total economic impact on the community by $26,998,000.  Hospitals across the state generated more than  $11.9 billion to the state’s economy along with 60,143 full time jobs. MJMH is responsible for the creation of 330 jobs.

The findings are featured in the  publication, Critical Care: The Economic Impact of Hospitals on Mississippi’s Economy,  and was  conducted by DataGen.

“As Mississippi leaders continue to consider the state’s economic priorities and look for ways to create more jobs, they should keep in mind the importance of hospitals and health care to the state economy,” said Sam W. Cameron, MHA President/CEO. “This study shows that health care is much more to Mississippi than hospitals, clinics and doctors. The ripple effect of the health care sector throughout Mississippi’s economy is enormous. What’s good for Mississippi’s hospitals is good for Mississippi’s economy.”

At MJMH, the study found that  Medicaid spending is responsible for only 11 percent of the hospital payer mix. The other parts of the payer mix are Private Pay/Other, 27 percent; Medicare, 51 percent;  and Uncompensated Care, 10 percent.

Analysis also concluded that through the recession, hospitals  have served as a firm foundation for the state’s economy.

Hospitals through operating and capital expenditures are also key to the creation of jobs and payroll in other businesses in the economy, the study found.

In total, 94,700 jobs are created by hospitals alone in Mississippi due to hospital employment, operational activities and construction activities.

MJMH recently went through the expansion and renovation process and opened recently. The hospital project involved renovation of 20,000 square feet of the existing facility and the addition of 60,000 square feet, for a total cost of $18.5 million.

DataGen analyzed not only the direct economic contribution of hospitals, but also calculated how many jobs and how much income and tax revenue is created as a secondary effect.

The jobs and payroll generated in other businesses are measured with employment and income multipliers derived for Mississippi.
