KOSCIUSKO —
Attala County forester Mike Daniels is well on his way to offering potted Christmas trees that can be planted in the yard and enjoyed for many years after the holiday season is over.
The offer comes in the form of the Murray X Cyprus, which is not only ideal for a Christmas tree but is also ideal for landscaping. The tree is a member of the Leyland Cyprus family.
One year ago, Daniels bought 500 Murray X liners, also known as seedlings, planted them in gallon containers. After a year he has repotted them into three gallon containers to continue their growth. He buys the seedlings from a nursery in Georgia.
This year he has continued the process with the purchase of 500 more trees growing them from one gallon containers and repotting to the three gallon buckets.
Daniels’ goal is to continue growing the trees to a six foot size that will require potting in a five gallon bucket. They are also ideal for landscaping and he will have them available for that purpose also, Daniels said.
“The Murray X is an improved variety of the Leyland Cyprus. It is more disease resistant, faster growing and has a smaller trunk,” Daniels said.
He said he came upon the decision to try the Murray X while participating in a Jump Start program sponsored by the Kosciusko-Attala Development Corporation (KADC). He entered the program in hopes of developing a plan to make his tree farm profitable. “During this program I was doing research and came upon the Murray X and decided this was the way to go,” Daniels said.
Daniels’ farm, Magnolia Forest and Nursery, is located on Knox Road in the area of New Hope Community. As a registered forester and timber consultant, he has been in business in Attala County for a number of years.
Daniels has developed a formula for his potting soil using a mixture of decomposed pine bark and topsoil taken from his property along with fertilizer and lime.
Since the Murray X does not reproduce, Daniels said his next project is to begin this winter grafting to increase his stock of trees.
