KOSCIUSKO —
The 40-plus seventh and eighth grade students at Ethel High School working with the reading tutor are making some improvements.
Attala County Schools Federal Programs Director Tara Kyle presented the Attala County School Board members with a letter from EHS Counselor Velvet Adcock, who oversees reading tutor Brenda Jackson, about the program.
Superintendent Bryan Weaver said Jackson sees about eight students a day with no more than two to three at a time.
With Ethel’s “Watch School” status due to low state test scores, grant funds were awarded to the school to provide a reading tutor for 90 days at $240 per day. The grant will also pay for 10 days with an education consulting firm.
The board approved the following:
n Minutes from the January 7 and January 22 meetings.
n 16th Section – return seized hunting equipment; cancel leases if not paid in 60 days; timber easement for Section 16-14-6; and to terminate leases due to lessees being deceased.
n Consent agenda: travel, use of school facility, schools trips, bus easements for Sarah Johnson, Edward Boyles, Mevlyn Hunt, Sherry Dean, and Shelia and Lucious Patterson.
n Financial: Claims and club and activity accounts
n Resignation of Michael Ray as Ethel High School principal, and Robin Wells McKay as a special education teacher at McAdams High School. Both will be effective at the end of the school year.
n Increase the bus drivers’ pay to $2 for driving to Allied Health.
n February 15 as advanced/proficient day for district schools that scored in those categories on the state test.
The board will meet February 18 at the superintendent’s office for the job evaluation of Weaver as mandated by the state.
On January 22, the board held a special called meeting to purchase three used buses at $58,000 each from Burrows in Laurel.
