KOSCIUSKO —
Retired educator William C. White Sr. is remembered this week not only for his more than 30 years as a teacher and principal in Kosciusko schools but for his involvement in the community and his church.
White, 92, a native of Attala County, died Feb. 22, 2013, at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital following an illness.
He retired in 1986 and devoted his retirement years to church and community activities.
Charles Hull, former principal at Kosciusko High School, was a student of White and later came back as a teacher and administrator to work with him. He said as a building trades student of White at Tipton Street High School, he established a mentor relationship with White.
“Mr. White was everything to me, like a father, and was very helpful from the time I was in the 10th grade as a student until I returned as a teacher and had the privilege of working with him. Whatever situation came up he could always work out a solution that was agreeable with everyone involved,” said Hull.
In addition to classroom teaching White also served in administrative positions as principal at Tipton Street High School and as co-principal at Kosciusko High School with longtime Kosciusko educator, the late Cadman Porter.
Hull, also a former principal at Kosciusko High School, said he was encouraged by White to take the position when it was offered.
White received his early education at Pleasant Hill School in Attala County and at the Attala Training School in Kosciusko.
Following four years in the U.S. Navy he returned home and attended Alcorn College, Jackson State, and Bradley University in Peoria, IL. He also did further study at Mississippi State University.
He was a former member of the Kosciusko City School Board, and served on the board of the Attala County Housing Authority. He was one of the founders of The Club, a bi-racial men’s civic club.
At Christian Liberty M.B. Church, he served as a trustee, usher, and deacon serving terms as co-chairman and chairman of the deacon board. He had served as Sunday School superintendent and Sunday School teacher.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m. at Christian Liberty Church. He is survived by sons Clinton White and Troy White Sr., both of Jackson.

The Nation’s Capitol: Ethel High School students see sites in Washington, D.C.
