Couple dies in house fire

Authorities say that two people have died in a house fire on Highland Drive in Kosciusko early Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. after flames were seen in a bedroom of the house by a passerby. When authorities arrived, the house was approximately 60 percent engulfed with flames coming from the roof.

“We began firefighter operations immediately to fight the fire with no way to get the occupants out of the house until the fire was contained,” Kosciusko Fire Chief Duane Burdine said. “But by that point it was just a recovery situation.”

Henry Hunter Jordan Jr. and Ann Firestone Jordan, the owners of Jordan Funeral Home in Kosciusko, died in the fire.

The fire is believed to have started on a bed in the spare bedroom that was used as a craft room. The State Fire Marshal has ruled it as an accidental fire.

“The Jordans were great people and pillars in the community; this is just a real tragic situation,” Burdine added.

This is the second fatal house fire in Attala County over the past ten days.
